History

Organisation for Sickle Cell Anaemia Relief & Thalassaemia Support (OSCAR Birmingham) is a voluntary organisation and registered charity established in 1974 primarily to promote greater awareness of Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Disorders (SCD’s). OSCAR Birmingham aims to support individuals affected by Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Disorders who may be socially disadvantaged due to social exclusion or lack of support.

  • OSCAR Birmingham offers a particular expertise in issues relating to the well-being of individuals, family members and communities affected by SCD’s.
  • OSCAR Birmingham is also committed enhancing the appropriateness of services offered to the whole community
  • OSCAR Birmingham is the only voluntary sector organisation in Birmingham specialising in ensuring the needs of people with SCD, their families and communities are met.
  • OSCAR Birmingham operates in Birmingham, and covers the surrounding areas.
TopAims & Objective
  • To reduce social isolation through the provision of opportunities for social interaction of clients and their families.
  • To educate clients, their families and carers to help manage their conditions more effectively and to maximise their quality of life, i.e. to help people “live as positively as possible” with these conditions.
  • To advocate: on behalf of individuals and their families.
  • To provide services that are accessible and  sensitive to the cultural and religious needs of clients and their families/carers .
  • To raise awareness, education, publicity and campaign on matters relating to Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia and Disorders associated with these conditions i.e. Stroke, Diabetes etc.
  • To work with other voluntary, statutory and community organisations that endorses our values and principles.
  • To inform and influence the development of policies and key initiatives regarding Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Disorders.
  • To act as a co-ordinating body to develop an integrated care package which will provide a holistic approach to the health, cultural and social care needs of our user groups and this will be achieved through:
  • To undertake research and disseminate information relating to Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Disorders to a local, regional and national audience.

The Mission of OSCAR Birmingham is to educate, support and provide relevant information though sign posting and advocacy to those with Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia disorders, their families and carers. through our work with partners, community groups and individuals we will raise public awareness of these conditions.

Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia blood disorders are incurable. Whilst we look forward to a life without Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia, our vision is to create the circumstances where people can “live life to the full with Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia”
