YOU Project

Youth Outreach Unite (YOU) Project

The YOU project is aimed at children and young people aged 10-18 years old who are:

  • Living with full condition of Sickle Cell or Thalassaemia.
  • Has family or friends living with this Illness.
  • Are living with Sickle Cell or Thalassaemia traits.

The Project is currently funded by Awards for ALL and provides opportunities for young people to come together from different backgrounds and communities within the Birmingham area to:

  • Socialise and make friends.
  • Build Support Networks.
  • Access support, information and guidance based on individual needs.
  • Have access to social, educational and recreational trips and activities.
  • Mentoring, training and workshops on nutrition, health, managing condition and coping strategies.

The YOU project offers drop in on a weekly basis, programmes during half term holiday periods, outreach within the community and outreach, advocacy support in relation to health and education welfare.

The project outcomes for young people include:

  • Becoming experts in living with their condition.
  • Improve skills and knowledge especially in a crisis.
  • Help raise awareness of genetic blood disorder.
  • Develop emotional resilience, improve well-being and self-esteem.
  • Developing stronger and close networks of support.
